Zune 4.0 was/is going to support Internet Radio?
 |
Upon my various ventures into checking out the Zune Software I’ve learnt a few things. For example, those 4 new Zune HD colours, or the fact that “Smart DJ”s original, and frankly more accurate name is “QuickMix”. But something far more interesting is a little something that I skipped over through my initial search, until I came across this “Radio” entry in the registry under the Zune tree.
As you can see, listed under the Radio tree are three radio stations, and in each entry? Why a link to their Internet Stream of course! Now obviously the only reason you would actively save a radio stream is if you were going to use it… for say streaming Internet Radio!! So uhh where is it? Well lets take a looksie shall we? Also listed is what we’d naturally assume to the Image source for the station logo in side the ZuneShellResources.dll, unfortunately however as you can see on the left of the image above, such files aren’t actually present. However, there is a NEW resource not found in previous Zune Software’s, simply called “RADIOPANEL.UIX”. I wonder what this is for…? (To avoid any confusion here, RADIOBUTTONS are those little circular checkbox-like buttons, not buttons for a radio!)
Now see if this were the previous Zune software we could easily see that this “panel” did, as before all UIX files followed basic XML structure, unfortunately now Microsoft seem to have decided to compile them (probably in an effort to boost GUI speed… or to stop nosy people from freely customising the software UI) and now all we’re left with is a lot of hex. Bugger.
But it’s saved Internet Radio streams on our computer, and there’s a mysterious new resource with Radio in the title, and the station logos are missing. So this could mean either:
-
They cut the feature earlier on, and removed the logo images, but forgot to remove the creation of registry keys?
-
They didn’t have enough time to finish the feature, and it’ll be implemented in a future release.
Personally I’d like to believe the latter, but only time will tell. In the meantime however, I’m going to crackdown and try and see what this RADIOPANEL does…

First glimpse at games….
 |
Yep, there’s been a lot of Zune HD details slipping through recently (which I haven’t been quite keeping up-to-date here at the moment due to personal issues), but one which many of us have been wanting to know more about is gaming. It’s no secret that the Zune HD is going to include games, heck its even been in official promotional material for a few weeks now, but until today we haven’t actually seen what it’s going to look like. 2D, 3D? XNA? Native Code? Better than an iPod Touch?
While we can’t answer the latter questions, just let, looking at the image above shown in a recently released promotional video is footage of the rumoured Burnout game running in full 3D on the Zune HD, thanks to it’s powerful nVidia Tegra processing chip. Undoubtedly Zune HD has more power under it’s hood than the iPod Touch, and it does have a smaller screen resolution to cater for, so we should be looking forward to even more impressive games than on Apples device, although unfortunately it does suffer the same pitfall – no buttons. Not game breaking obviously, but there will be times when they are sorely missed. Still, one more reason to get excited. Just 4 days now.

Zune HD Rumours Galore
 |

Seems it’s been quite the few days for Zune rumours, with both Gizmodo and Neowin leaking us some juicy new information.
First up, Gizmodo reports that their tipster, who leaked them some internal Microsoft documents, claims that Zune HD will be launching stateside 8 September 2009, in both 16 & 32 GB, as well as being handed the marketing image above. Seems to be then that the 16GB will be available in black, whilst the 32GB will be in “Platinum”, though we’ll have to wait for official confirmation first. Still though, it now appears the Black Zune HD will reach retail channels at launch.
Neowin’s source also confirms this information in a short but sweet interview. Upon being asked whether movie downloads will be hitting the Zune Marketplace, he replied
“The Zune team is working hard to get all the licensing agreements in order.”
Of course, with Zune branding succeeding Xbox Live’s Movie Marketplace, it’s really only a matter of time before movies make it to the Zune desktop marketplace. Also noteworthy for those of us worried about the price,
“The prices are not set in stone yet, but the 16GB will be somewhere in the range of $249 -$280”
So, more than the 120GB Zune then, and in the UK you’d be looking at around £200 for the 16GB unit, maybe more. I’m not really sure how I feel about that. No word on the 32GB unit, but rest assured it’s probably going to be pricey.
Other than that, there is an interesting feature to note that isn’t in the leaked documentation, but the leaking image above. Note the artist photos in the now playing screen? It seems the Zune firmware is following suit of the Zune Desktop software’s now playing screen introduced in 3.0, displaying high quality press shots of the artist. And I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look nice.

Third Gen Zune On The Way!
 |
Yes, you heard it right! Finally the News has been slipped around Twitter (From Brian Seitz, member of the Zune team) and although Info Is slim, there is a certain chance for a 3rd Gen Zune to be out this Summer/Fall.
Now of course there are now leaks on what this Zune will be like (IE – Firmware, Size (Physical and Hard Drive) Touch) or anything like that, but looking at the new WinMo 7 design maybe this could be the new Zune firmware, or child of. Also, it might glimpse the idea of a touch screen Zune, but lets not dwell on that.
Start saving! More info on this when its released/leaked.

Touch coming to Microsoft
 |
We’ve all heard about the idea of a Touch Zune, and the slashes its had with if it is or isn’t coming out. President of the Entertainments and Devices Division at Microsoft, Robbie Bach, gave us a little insight to what is going on around Microsoft. Pinch of salt with this one guys. (Link to webpage)
“One student, Marian Abdullahi of Kent-Meridian High School, asked, "I was wondering if you plan on making a touch-screen Zune?"
Bach: "Ah, a question about whether we’re going to make a touch-screen Zune. I won’t talk about future product things that we’re doing explicitly, cause that will get me in trouble with a lot of people.
"I will say that some of the some of the things I showed today around touch and vocie and cameras and those types of things, you will start to see that in a lot of places, not just in my division but across all of Microsoft.
"So, independent of specific plans for any specific product, you should just assume over time that that’s going to become part of the products that we produce. And, you know, specific timing and all those things, I’ll leave aside, but it is a huge trend. And once you have something like touch or voice to interact with, you wonder why you did it the old way. So I think that’s going to be a very powerful trend." “
This is of course after the news of the Zune Team getting split up (Posted here) and news that there will be a new product within this year. Start getting your hopes up!

Zune Touch & Zune Mobile unveiled (again) in Job listing?
 |

We’ve all heard the countless Zune Mobile rumours floating around the internet (and to a lesser extent, Touch screen Zune’s, though there’s little actual evidence to that one). So lets feed the fire shall we?
While browsing through Microsoft’s Job Listings’ for Zune, I stumbled across this very interesting one for a User Experience Designer. Take the following requirements for example:
- Experience with human interface and navigation models requiring engineering prototypes of dpads, switches, accelerometers, touch screen input variables.
- Sensibility for mobile communications and entertainment applications.
Well, obvious question, why do they need someone with experience with “Touch Screen Input variables”? Well there’s two ways to look at this. Firstly, they want someone who can help with the Mobile/Windows Mobile version of the Zune software. As we all, know mobile phone manufacturers, and more specifically those of Windows Mobile phones, are more and more integrating touch screens into their devices, and any Zune software client to be developed for these devices is going to have to leverage these capabilities.
Or, a cooler option: there’s a touch screen Zune coming. To be honest, I much prefer that conclusion. Also good to note that the Zune team seem to be considering how to leverage an accelerometer in upcoming devices, though that’s pretty much a given in this day and age.
On a far more presumptuous point, the listing also says:
Knowledge of new technologies, authoring environments and computer graphics tools is preferred.
Now, the only real new set of technologies I can think of is WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), which if you’ve seen anything of, you’d know allows developers to create truly stunning and animated user interfaces without large performance costs. Hopefully this means we’ll be seeing the Zune Software shell re-written in WPF sometime soon!

Microsoft’s Plans for 2009 Zune Services Evolution
 |
So like the rest of us, I guess you’ve been wondering what’s up Microsoft’s rather large sleeves for Zune in 2009, and it’s been hard to tell so far with Microsoft being so secretive. Thankfully however, a very observant tech blogger seems to have unearthed some tasty treats for us which should give us a little glimpse…
Ever heard of MusiWave? Its some French based mobile music and entertainment services provider that Microsoft struck an agreement to acquire last year. Great. But what’s really interesting is what they’re doing for Microsoft now.

Look at their logo… nice familiar colour scheme wouldn’t you say? And say… look at the design at the bottom of their website… again, familiar no? Though that’s not really enough to go on to say they’re working on Zune… not until you read this rather obvious job listing:
"Zune Services is building an entertainment store for a wide range of Zune clients or ‘tuners,’…Today these tuners include the Windows PC client, the Zune web site and the Zune device; in the future there will be more. Each of these tuners access a set of rich web services implemented by Zune and soon by Musiwave as well."
Meanwhile a Dec. 2 posting for a software development job reads:
"The Zune organization is making a strategic change from a 3rd party content provider to in-house… We need to rebuild, re-architect, and revitalize a content ingestion pipeline that powers the entire Zune business. And we have a very short time to do it."
While a further listing goes onto state:
"As Musiwave powers Zune Marketplace, we’ll need to ‘ingest’ data from multiple sources and process it in a way that’s optimal for Zune to show to the users. We’ll also continue to look at new types of data we can load into our system and expose to make music in Zune an ever richer experience."
So what’s this all pointing too? Well it seems obvious that Microsoft are trying to reinvent the underlying Zune Architecture for a rather large expansion, and by the looks of it (“we have a very short time”) its going to happen late 2009, though to what end its not really clear. New Client software’s beyond the PC & Devices likely only leaves room for the obvious: Mobile Software! (Which in itself is made more likely from the addition of Musiwave implementation).
And guess what? Also seems there’s something called a Zune Xbox in works!
Blogger Matt Rosoff … found another Zune listing that refers to a "Zune Xbox" — evidence that the company will connect it digital music initiative and video-game console in new ways.
"The Zune Design team seeks a visual designer who is passionate about software design, software innovation and consumer entertainment experiences," reads the Oct. 21 posting for a user experience designer. "We are looking for a strong, collaborative designer to work closely with the creative directors to propose innovative designs and content solutions for the Zune Device UI, Zune Xbox and Zune PC Application."
Okay, so Zune Xbox sounds like something an uneducated person would say, but if it was real, what exactly would it be? Its almost certainly not a new hardware device, so its likely to assume its one of these new so called “tuners” mentioned above. I guess if I were to take a stab in the dark I’d like to see it being Full HD version of the Zune Interface on your TV (A greatly upscaled TV-Out option per-se), and lets be honest hear, how awesome would that be?!
Paul Thurrott from WinSupersite has a similar, and intriguing look on it:
“So. What’s a “Zune Xbox.” Here’s my guess: All you have to do is look at the paltry music, photos, and movie playback experiences that still exist for the Xbox 360 in the new UI (New Xbox Experience) to quickly realize they’re in drastic need of updating. Putting the Zune UI on the Xbox 360 as the UI for digital media (alongside Media Center, I guess) makes perfect sense. In fact, when you consider that virtually the entire Xbox 360 dashboard was replaced as part of the NXE—except for the digital media playback bits—it’s pretty obvious.”

Squashing the Zune Phone Rumour
 |

Amongst the flood of Zune Phone rumours, a very smart writer over at ComputerWorld wrote this fantastic article intending to squash the idea that their will ever be a Zune phone, coming out with some of the following choice quotes:
“A Zune phone could be insanely great. Too bad Microsoft isn’t smart enough to make one”
“The most likely Zune phone, or "Pink" or "Danger-like" phone-centric CES announcement will be more of what Microsoft has been giving us for years: a confusing muddle of bloated initiatives nobody wants.”
Whether or not you agree with him, he does bring forward some very well thought out points to our attention in his article, which may quite possibly sway your opinion on the matter, so read on for the full article.

Zune Mobile Rumour (Again!?)
 |

Ok, so there’s been a LOT of these Zune Phone rumours ever since Apple released their iPod Touch, and recently they seem to have picked up with quite a storm, so here’s another one for you.
In a recent post about how to fix Windows Mobile, Paul Thurrott, a well known technology blogger, made the following comment:
“Yep. This is bad. Microsoft is working on a number of things before that major update, Windows Mobile 7. These include a new version of the WM version of IE, called Internet Explorer 6, and a new Windows Mobile platform called Zune Mobile that includes Zune functionality. But it’s not happening quickly enough.”
Yep, you read that right, Microsoft are apparently working on a new Windows Mobile platform based around Zune (presumably as a replacement for the problematic Windows Mobile). Now usually I’d chalk this down as just another unfounded rumour, but as Paul mentions, “I met with the Windows Mobile folks just this week…”, and he is usually very reliable… so either he’s casually slipped something he shouldn’t have, or he’s just making presumptions.
Either way, these Zune Phone rumours are just going to keep on coming, until the day Microsoft finally takes the wraps off it, so you’re just going to have to get used to it!

Zune in the UK soon?
 |
Over the last few months there has been a lot of speculation about when the Zune will arrive in the UK and other European territories. With all the signs pointing to it so far, many of us are hoping and praying that they’ll make there way to our shores some time in 2009.
Now we’ve all heard of dodgy stories about Microsoft Exec’s slipping the date, but what other evidence is there?
Well, here’s a quick shred that points towards the fact the Microsoft have definitely been considering it – We all know Zune.net is the main site for the Zune, and Zune.com redirects to it. But what about Zune.co.uk?
Heading off to Zune.co.uk, you’re presented with an “Under Construction” page. Not too helpful. So first things first, do Microsoft actually own the domain? Naturally, heading over to EasyWhoIs and checking up the site gives us a few more useful tidbits of information about the site.

For one, the site is definitely owned by Microsoft. Awesome. Two, Microsoft originally registered the site on May 2006… and get this, the American Zune.net was originally registered in June 06! Weird right? Of course the fact that the site has been registered for so long doesn’t give much hope that Microsoft are going to do anything real soon… but at least they seem to have UK launch planned on the cards riiiiight?

Zune on the New Xbox Experience
 |
On November 17, Microsoft will official unleash the New Xbox Experience, a massive refresh of the Xbox 360 Firmware with a completely new look, to 360 owners worldwide.
Now, what with Zune & 360 being Microsoft’s two biggest entertainment devices, and confirmation of upcoming integration of Zune & 360, many thought the New Xbox Experience update would be the perfect time for Microsoft to pull greatly enhanced Zune integration with the 360 out of the hat.
Luckily enough, I’ve been specially selected by Microsoft to test out the final version of the NXE over two weeks before its official release. So, how has Zune integration changed, if at all, you asked? Well read on to find out all…

Myth Busting: Purple Zunes
 |

Recently there’s been a few rumours floating around the web about Purple coloured Zunes, backed up by pictures from the official Zune.net websites no less, with what at first sight appears to be a genuinely Purple coloured Zune.
But I was sceptical. Only recently I’d gone through the Zune software and found many new Zune colour combos, and yet no Purple? Surely if a Purple Zune was destined to come out soon it would join its other sibling colours in the Zune software? So I decided to do some digging around of my own and see what was really going on…
And alas, unfortunately it turns out there are no Zune’s of this awesome colour (yet), so what’s up with the pictures then?
Well, its all down to a technical colour mix up, which I’ve explained in relative detail after the break…
